Buying an RV with a Low Credit Score: Your Options Explained

One of the most frequent questions our finance team receives is: "My credit score is low—can I still buy an RV?" At RV Canada, the answer is overwhelmingly yes. While traditional banks often require scores of 700+ for leisure loans, our specialized dealership network works with lenders who understand that a low score (often defined as 580–660) doesn't mean you are a high risk. We look at your income, your stability, and the equity in the RV to find a way to get you approved for a Jayco, Forest River, or Keystone unit today.

Is There a Minimum Credit Score to Buy an RV?

There is no single "magic number" that guarantees approval or rejection. While a score above 680 will get you the absolute lowest "Prime" rates, we successfully finance hundreds of customers with scores in the 500s and 600s every season.

Why? because RV loans are secured loans. The RV itself acts as collateral for the bank. This security reduces the lender's risk, making them much more willing to overlook a lower credit score than if you were applying for an unsecured credit card or personal line of credit.

How We Get Low Scores Approved

When your score is low, our Finance Managers build a "story" for the lender. We highlight your strengths:

  • Job Stability: Long-term employment helps outweigh a low score.

  • Debt-to-Income Ratio: If you have low monthly debt obligations, lenders are more likely to approve you even with a lower beacon score.

  • Payment History: We show them that despite a past dip, your recent payments have been on time.

Strategies to Buy with a Low Score

If you are worried about your score, here are three proven ways to secure an approval:

  1. The "Cash Down" Advantage: Putting money down (10% to 20%) is the single best way to overcome a low credit score. It lowers the amount you need to borrow and shows the lender you are serious.

  2. Add a Co-Signer: Adding a spouse or family member with a stronger score to the application can instantly bump you into a better interest rate tier.

  3. Choose the Right RV: We might recommend starting with a high-value Travel Trailer or Tent Camper rather than a luxury Diesel Motorhome. Lowering the total loan amount makes approval much easier.

Don't Let "Online Calculators" Discourage You

Generic online loan calculators often reject anyone under a 650 score. These tools do not reflect the reality of our dealership lending network. We have direct relationships with Credit Rebuilding Lenders that generic websites do not access.

Rebuild Your Score for the Future

Buying an RV with a low score is actually a smart strategic move. It gives you a substantial "Installment Loan" on your credit report. By making your payments on time for 12–18 months, you can drastically improve your score. Many of our clients refinance their RV loan after a year or two to lower their rate once their credit has bounced back!
