The Guide to Freedom Camping (Boondocking) in Canada

For our guests from Europe—especially Germany and the Netherlands—the concept of "Wild Camping" is the ultimate dream. In North America, we call this Boondocking or Dry Camping. It means camping without electrical, water, or sewer hookups.

Can you just park anywhere in Canada? No. But there are millions of acres where you can camp for free or very cheap, provided you know the rules. Our fleet is "Boondocking Ready," equipped with fresh water tanks, propane systems, and 12V house batteries that allow you to live comfortably "off the grid" for 2-3 days at a time.

Where Can You Camp?

  • Crown Land (Public Land):

    • In Ontario, Canadian residents can camp for free on Crown Land for up to 21 days. Non-residents (International Visitors) must buy a permit, which is very affordable (approx $10/day). This offers the most secluded, private camping experiences by lakes and forests.

  • Provincial Parks (Non-Electric Sites):

    • Every Provincial Park has "Unserviced" loops. These are cheaper than powered sites, more private, and often located closer to the water. This is the safest way to "wild camp" while still having access to a dump station and showers nearby.

  • Walmart & Truck Stops:

    • For transit nights (just sleeping between destinations), many Walmart Supercentres allow RVs to park overnight for free. You must check with the specific store manager upon arrival. It isn't glamorous, but it is convenient!

Boondocking Essentials:

  • Water Conservation:

    • Our units hold approx 150L of water. Quick "Navy Showers" are the key!

  • Power Management:

    • Your outlets (plugs) won't work without a generator or shore power, but your lights, water pump, and fridge will run off the battery and propane.
